Cricket Champions Trophy 2025: jwin7 Rohit, Rahul and spinners lead India to third Champions Trophy win
jwin7 The Champions Trophy 2025 final between India and New Zealand on Sunday proved disappointing for Rohit Sharma and his teammates. The Black Caps chose to bat first and got off to a good start, scoring first and remaining unbeaten in 8 innings. However, India bounced back strongly and took three runs in the next five overs to leave New Zealand at 75/3 in 12.2 overs. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets while Varun Chakarvarthy took one. Just when India was aiming for a fourth breakthrough, it suffered a huge blow.
In the 22nd over, Rohit Sharma handed the ball to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and with the help of Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand were steady in the innings.
In the fourth delivery of the over, Jadeja hit Latham's leg guard and appealed to be ruled LBW. The field indicated not out and Rohit came over to discuss the situation with his teammates. Although wicketkeeper KL Rahul was reluctant to accept DRS, Jadeja convinced Rohit to use the review.
When India opted for DRS, the third umpire showed that the ball had actually not hit the stumps due to its height and Latham remained not out. Hence, India ended up losing the DRS review.
Seeing this, commentators Ravi Shastri and Dinesh Karthik said that Rohit should have listened to Rahul as he knew the ball would go over the stumps.
"When the DRS call came up, KL Rahul was very balanced. As expected, he bowled well. But Rohit Sharma decided to listen to the bowler and go for DRS," said Dinesh Karthik.
On the other hand, Ravi Shastri said: KL Rahul might have meant that the ball was flying high. He has a bird's eye view of where the ball might go.
It is also worth noting that two overs after this incident, Jadeja beat Latham by 14 runs.
