Ranji Trophy 2025: jwin7 Sachin Baby recovers from groin injury to continue glorious journey with Kerala

jwin7 In the first semi-final of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Kerala fielded 11-man squads of contrasting strengths.

Kerala captain Sachin Baby won the toss and chose to bat first, taking the upper hand and looking to make an impressive first innings performance. Gujarat captain Chintan Gaja said he would bowl first if he won the wicket, pointing out that help would be given to fast bowlers only in the first session of the first day.

"When we saw the stumps in the morning, we thought it was a bit dry. We had thought of sending out three fast bowlers. Fortunately, we won the wicket and bowled well. "The new ball did not move as much as we expected," captain Babby told Sportstar at the end of the first day's play.

“However, the frequent loss of wickets means we are still under pressure. The wicket is dry and we have to bat long and score high to provide a cushion for our bowlers. The spinners are the main threat in our starting line-up and they will get more help in the coming days.

The visitors fought hard to score 206 runs at the loss of four wickets, with the captain remaining unbeaten with 69 off 193 balls. This was Sachin’s first half-century in a domestic red-ball tournament since the group match against Haryana in November last year.

The 36-year-old had scored over 800 runs in the previous two editions of the Ranji tournament but failed to live up to the same high standards this time around. A groin injury sustained during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy forced him to take a break from the tournament and he was unable to participate in the Vijay Hazare 50-over tournament that followed.

"After the injury, I didn't get too good results, so I wanted to get good results. After I bowled 162 in the last match, my confidence has grown. So, I thought I would take the responsibility and go and bat," said the Kerala captain.
