Nothing highlights the democratization of Indian cricket more than the list of Ranji Trophy winners over the past eight seasons.

Since Karnataka won the last of eight titles in 2014-15, Saurashtra and Vidarbha have won the crown twice each, Gujarat once and Madhya Pradesh once. Powerhouse Mumbai booked the remaining two games but had to wait six years after winning the title in 2015-16.

Karnataka has seen this deepening mark at close quarters as it lost to Vidarbha and Saurashtra in its last few knockout matches. This should make it clear how serious a test awaits Mayank Agarwal & Co. when they take on Madhya Pradesh in the Elite Group C opener of the 2024-25 season at the Holkar Stadium starting from Friday.

Madhya Pradesh are the champions in the 2021-22 season and have reached the semi-finals in the subsequent two seasons. Under the guidance of the astute Chandrakant Pandit, the team has the likes of Rajat Patidar, Venkatesh Iyer, Avish Khan (Avesh Khan) and off-ball bowler Saransh Jain, which makes it a strong line-up.

In contrast, Karnataka is in a state of flux. While Mayank, Manish Pandey and Devdutt Padikkal form a reliable batting trio, Padikkal, who made his Test debut earlier this year, is expected to be in and out of the India A line-up before the senior team visits at a later date November before Australia.
